Sustainability
The AJ is working with isla to measure the carbon footprint of this event, taking recommendations on how to improve our performance and impact on the environment. We will publish the results of this report after the event.
Our company commitment to sustainability at events can be found below:
OUR EVENT ATTENDEES
SWAG – is it valuable to the attendee?? We ask to keep this to a minimum with the aim to use sustainable/recyclable or compostable materials.
NO ‘SINGLE USE’ BOTTLES – we encourage attendees to bring their own reusable bottles and provide water stations for refilling these.
GETTING TO OUR EVENTS – directions for public transport only are detailed on the event website.
OUR EVENT VENUE
At The Brewery, they are proud of their considered approach to sustainability and the constant steps they make to be eco-friendly and environmentally conscious. It is crucial that individuals and businesses alike make the decision to be more eco-conscious and, in doing so, take vital steps to help safeguard the environment. From energy and water conservation to minimising waste, they explore their approach to sustainability and the many initiatives we have in place. Please read more: Sustainability_at_The_Brewery.pdf
OUR MENU
The menu for this event has been chosen with sustainability in mind. We will be offering a meat-free menu, with sustainably sourced fish and where possible, the venue looks to source local/ regional ingredients to minimise delivery impacts in order to reduce CO2 emissions from delivery of suppliers.
OUR EVENT SUPPLIERS
The Architects’ Journal chooses its suppliers with a bias towards those partners who take sustainability seriously.
EVENT COLLATERAL, SIGNAGNE AND EXHIBITION STANDS - Our event guide programmes and tickets are electronic instead of printed. The signage we use is from Insite Graphics which holds ISO14001 certification . Event signage is all either recyclable, reusable, or used to provide community power when disposed of – none will go to landfill. All the ink is water-based and much of our signage is moving to carboard-based alternatives, recyclable in generic paper waste collections. For more information click here .
AV SUPPLIER – we have chosen our AV supplier based on their positive sustainability policy, which you can read here .
COURIERS – we request electric vehicles for our preferred couriers Santis Global. For more information click here .
TRANSPORT – employees are encouraged to take public transport to event or to travel using our ‘uber green’ company account. For more information click here .
LANYARDS – where possible, we will source lanyards that are made from sustainable materials such as bamboo, and we aim for these to be returned, disinfected, and reused.
WE NEED TO WORK HARDER
This section of the website isn’t just dedicated to shouting about how great we are for doing what we should have been doing all along. We need to do better. We would love to hear from you on how you think we could improve. Please email any awards suggestions to ajretrofit.awards@emap.com. You can also complete the post-event survey which will be emailed to you after the event.
Carbon report
The sustainable choices implemented in the planning of the AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards 2024 have resulted in a total carbon reduction of 7.7 tonnes CO2e . That’s the same carbon emissions as:
- Driving 28,000 miles in a petrol car
- Making 52,000 cups of coffee
- Enough CO2e to fill 57 London buses
